Cavehill Primary School

Working Together Towards Excellence

Admissions Information for September 2024

The school is a controlled, co-educational primary day school. The expected enrolment is 406 children.

Copies of the criteria applied for entry are published on the Education Authority's website or collected in person from the school. Copies may also be requested by post on receipt of a stamped self-addressed envelope. The school may be viewed by arrangement with the Principal.

P1 Admissions Criteria for September 2024

Only children who will have attained compulsory school age at the time of their proposed admission, including those children whose parents deferred their admission to primary school in September 2023 as defined by the new School Age (NI) Act (both groups to be treated equally), will be considered for admission to Primary 1.  Priority will be given to pupils who are resident in N Ireland at the time of application.

Admissions Criteria

During the admissions procedure when applying the criteria punctual applications will be considered before late applications are considered.   The application procedure opens on 9 January 2024 at 12noon (GMT) and an application submitted by the closing date of 26 January 2024 at 12noon (GMT) will be treated as a punctual application.   An application received after 12noon (GMT) on 26 January 2024 and up to 4 pm on 31 January 2024 will be treated as a late application, this is also the last date and time for processing a change of preference in exceptional circumstances.  After 4 pm on 31 January 2024 no applications will be processed until after the close of procedure on 25 April 2024.

In the event of the school being oversubscribed these criteria will be used in the order set down as follows:

  1. Children who have siblings currently at the school. (Indicate name and year group).
  2. Children in order of the closest proximity of the school to the child’s permanent residence on the date of application. Proximity to the school will be calculated using Google Maps to measure the distance between the school and the child’s residence using public roads and travelling by car.
  3. If still oversubscribed after the above criteria have been applied in the order listed, then final selection will be on the basis of the initial letter of the surname in the following order:

H B Y O C P L Q S T G M D V X I A R N K U J W Z E F

The order was determined by a random selection of the letters. In the event of surnames with the same initial letter, the subsequent letters of the surname will be used in alphabetical order. In the event of two identical surnames, the initial letter of the first forename as registered on the birth certificate will be used. In the event of the first forenames beginning with the same letter, the subsequent letters of the forename will be used in alphabetical order. If the remaining pupils have the same first name, then the eldest child will be offered the remaining place.

When considering which children should be selected for admission, the Board of Governors will only take into account information which is detailed on the application or provided directly to the school. Parents/Guardians should therefore ensure that all information pertaining to their child and relevant to the school’s admissions criteria is stated on the application or provided directly to the first preference school.  Examples of such information include whether the child has brothers and/or sisters attending the school.

Duty to Verify

The Board of Governors reserves the right to require such supplementary evidence as it may determine to support or verify information on any application.

If the requested evidence is not provided to the Board of Governors by the deadline given, this will result in the withdrawal of an offer of a place.  Similarly, if information is supplied which appears to be false or misleading in any material way, the offer of a place will be withdrawn.

Waiting List

Should a vacancy arise after Thursday 25 April 2024, all applications to P1 that were initially refused, along with any new or late applications, will be treated equally and the published criteria applied. Please note that it is the responsibility of parents to inform school if they wish their child to be placed on this waiting list, which will then remain in place until 30 June 2024.

The school will contact you in writing, at the address specified on the application form, if your child gains a place by this method and parents will be given 5 working days to inform the school if they wish to accept this offer before the place is offered to the next eligible person on the waiting list.

Further information on the admission process can be obtained from the Education Authority: www.eani.org.uk
